오스트리아 고원 티롤의 아르코에서 태어난 세간티니는 이탈리아 국적으로 변경하는 과정에서 사무적인 문제로 무국적이 된후 평생을 무국적자로 살았습니다.

어려서 부모를 잃고 이복 누나와 이탈리아 밀라노로 이주 힘겨운 생활을 했으며 30세까지는 문맹이었다고 합니다.

그러나 미술에 재능을 보여 18세에 미술학교에 입학하여 그림을 배워 화가가 되었습니다. 친구의 여동생인 비체와 사랑에 빠져 결혼했으나 무국적자 신분이라 혼인신고를 할 수 없었습니다.

무국적자, (미혼인) 동거관계 등으로 교회와 주민들과의 갈등으로 한 곳에 정착하지 못하고 떠돌다가 스위스 알프스해발고도 1207m의 사보그린에 정착하였습니다.

알프스의 산악, 호수, 산촌 마을에서 펼쳐지는 풍광, 풍물, 생활 등을, 아침 저녁으로 광선이 바뀌는 데 따라 자연감정이 넘쳐흐르는 시적 표현의 세계로 묘사하였다는 평가를 받고 있습니다. 알프스 특유의 밝은 광선의 효과를 점묘풍(點描風)의 터치로 표현하였습니다.

그의 그림은 유럽 전역에 알려졌고 여러 전시회에 출품해 성공을 거두었고 유럽의 여러 미술관에서 그의 그림을 구입했습니다. 그러나 무국적자 였던 그는 전시회 참가를 위해 여행을 할 수가 없었습니다. 40세 젊은 나이에 세상을 떠난 것이 무척 아쉽습니다. 그의 사후에 스위스 정부가 국적을 부여했다고 합니다
